We couldn’t find it, so we built it
We wanted to know something that sounds simple: when can we afford the next big thing? The investment property, the year off, stopping work for good. And would the money last once we did?
Answering it properly means following every year forward with all of Australia’s rules working at once: tax and the Medicare levy, super and when you can touch it, stamp duty, loans and offsets, capital gains, the Age Pension. We looked for a tool that did all of that and was still simple to use. There are good budgeting apps and plenty of planning websites, but forecasting your runway is a harder problem, and we couldn’t find anything that solved it.
So we built Runway.
What we found instead
Budgeting apps look back
They sort last month’s transactions into categories. Useful, but they can’t tell you whether you can buy in 2030, or what happens to your super if you do.
Calculators answer one question
A mortgage calculator, a stamp duty calculator, a super calculator, a retirement calculator. Each ignores the others, so none of them adds up to your life.
Planners skip the rules, or drown you in them
Some use a flat tax rate and a guess at growth. Others ask dozens of questions before they show you anything. Neither tells you plainly when.
